I’m a strong advocate for higher education. Somewhere along middle and high school it clicked to me that my grades were an important factor in going to college. So I worked hard to graduate in the top 5% of my high school graduating class.
I didn’t get a scholarship to Spelman University (as I hoped) because my SAT scores were only 880, and this is back when the highest score was 1600. I knew that I wasn’t dumb, but I didn’t study the way I should’ve for the exam.
From 2005 – 2007 I taught 8th grade English for Prince George’s County Public Schools. It wasn’t until after I left the teaching field that I realized I needed to do something to promote higher education. Thus, I’ve come up with Beatrice McClearn’s Annual College Bound Outreach in 2009.
Join the competition every year November 26 – January 30
